The fungus Cochliobolus sativus is the teleomorph (sexual stage) of Bipolaris sorokiniana (anamorph) which is the causal agent of a wide variety of cereal diseases. The pathogen can infect and cause disease on the root (where it is known as common root rot), leaf and stem, and head tissue. s is extremely rare in nature and thus it is the asexual or anamorphic stage which causes : Dothideomycetes. Silver scurf is a plant disease that is caused by the plant pathogen Helminthosporium solani. Silver scurf is a blemish disease, meaning the effect it has on tubers is mostly cosmetic and affects “fresh market, processing and seed tuber potatoes." There are some reports of it affecting development, meaning growth and tuber : Pleosporaceae.

of fungal structures. Many factors, however, can alter the size of fungal structures. Dosdall (1) reported the mean length of Helminthosporium sativum Pam., King, & Bakke conidia to be 66, 68, and 83 t/ when produced on potato-dextrose agar (PDA), autoclaved ripe barley heads, and green barley leaves, respectively. Helminthosporium sativum, H. rostratum and H. bicolor were tested for their saprophytic ability in colonizing wheat straws in unsterilized soil by a direct observation method.

Straws placed on unsterilized soil were loosely covered with the same soil so that at places the straws were by: 4.

Melchers(8) records Helminthosporium associated with Fusarium and other fungi in a foot-rot of oats in U.S.A., but the species is not specified.

In view of the prevalence in America of Helminthosporium sativum, a common cause of foot-rot of cereals, it is perhaps permissible to infer that this was the species by: 8. The pathogenicity of H. sativum was increasingly depressed by each of the six fungi as soil temperature was increased from 15° to 26 °C.

The pH shifts which these fungi induced in soil were not sufficient to be considered as a factor in depressing pathogenicity. However, owing to the fact that OpJiiobolus graminis is a more vigorous parasite than Helmintho- sporium sativum, the wheat plants were more severly diseased in the experiments under discussion and it became necessary to classify the.
